Deletion of accounts
« on: June 15, 2011, 07:35:54 am »

Due to he enormous number of spam posts I've first deleted the spam posts, enabled reCAPTCHA (hope it works, seems to...) and deleted a lot of unknown user accounts with 0 posts.
If your user account was deleted, it happened entirely by accident and no evil harmful intend. Please understand this clean up was done to prevent the enormous amount of spam posts on this forum.

I hope this helps against the annoying spam.

I c.

I wonder whether there's a bug in SMF or that it really is someone who's creating all these accounts as afaik it's not possible (yet) for bots to decipher reCAPTCHA's, right?

Shouldnt be possible to crack for bots. Maybe enable manual account activation instead? (doubt there are much real ppl registering nowadays)

Well, I would like to test the reCAPTCHA first, but if the results aren't much good then I'll do that instead. Would probably mean a lot of registration spam on Seye's e-mail address though...

Can't register here without the correct captcha, so either those accounts involve manual typers or it is just bugged.

For those who haven't noticed, it seems my hack in the registration form solves the issue. I added an extra question, What's the name of this website. Should be easy enough to answer for a human, but pretty darn difficult for a general bot ;)

Although I must say, the forums are pretty quiet now :|

Did you check whether registering is still possible? Since I tried something like this quite a while back when we had spam, and adding the question broke registration even if you put in the right answer. So if you used some existing (maybe even already installed) add-on, there's a resonable chance that it won't work at all now. :P

Well after I enabled the CAPTCHA alone, bots could still register. Once I added in my dirty hack, I could register once I entered the right answer.

So, Seye, how's the USA? Or are you back already?

EWD, someone from Soldier of Chaos had difficulty registering. The bot trap won't let him in, the one that asks to write the name of the website.

I'm not sure if I should've noted that it is Case Sensitive? And without the forum. Not sure what he typed there but.... :+

Two of them have been stumped. Maybe you need to be more clear or allow more possibilities.
