Gwynzer's Guide to Ventrilo

This guide is geared towards version 3.x of ventrilo, however most of it applies to the older version supported by blackintel (2.3.0) aswell... any differences shall be noted in this guide.  This guide is designed for a person with litteraly no knowledge of how things work, so aplogies if it seems condesending to more advanced users.  Please note this guide is an evergoing work in progress, any feedback or suggestions would be appreciated.

Getting Started with Ventrilo

First, we will take a look at the Layout of Ventrilo. You may notice the numbering around some of the important buttons, we'll be looking at these later. The "Server Is Available" text doesn't appear in 2.3.0

Now, the first thing we are going to look at is setting up a username. Click the arrow -> inside box 1, you will be presented with a similar screen to this:

Click "New" and enter your desired username in the box that appears and click OK.  Now set up your "phonetic" name in the "Phonetic" box. This is VERY important.  Your phonetic name is what you want Ventrilo to say when you join and leave the server. You may notice mine says "Gwin-zer" instead of "Gwynzer", this is because my name sounds strange as "Gwynzer" when ventrilo says it, however it sounds correct when replaced witn "Gwin-zer".  If you have any numbers in your name (example: r4v4g3) please remove them and replace them with the letters they represent (Ravage).  Do not include any punctiontion such has underscores _ or circumflexes ^, as ventrilo will pronounce the punctuation and it gets extremely annoying for everybody else.  Having an innapropriate phonetic name may get you kicked or banned from the server you are joining to.

Now we will look at connecting to a server, go back to the main ventrilo window and click on the arrow -> beside the server.  You will see a box similar to this appear:

Click "New" and enter any name you prefer, I suggest "BlackIntel" as it is easy to remember. In the hostname/IP type in "ventrilo3.blackintel.org" and for port type in "28384". You do not require anything in the password or default channel box, make sure all the check boxes are ticked, and hit OK, now press the "Connect" button to join the server!  For Ventrilo 2.3.0 users, type in "blackintel.org" for Hostname, and "3784" for port

Setting Up Your Microphone

Now we are going to go to the setup menu (Number 3 on the picture at the top of the previous post), you will see a window similar to this appear:

First we will look at setting up a push to talk key (red box). This is a key that will activate your mic when you press it, and disable your mic when it isn't pressed. This is much prefered to voice activation (Where it turns on when you speak) so other users don't hear you breathing, or speaking to family/friends when you don't want them to listen.  To begin with, make sure you have the same 4 checkboxes  ticked that I do. Now, click the "hotkey" box and tap what button you wish to set as your Push To Talk key.  If its a key which has a fairly important function ingame, uncheck the "Disable Hotkey" box. This box disables all use of that hotkey to all other programs except for ventrilo, I use the left windows key for mine, as it is easily accessable and because I have the box checked, doesn't do anything EXCEPT activate my mic.

Now we will look at volume control(green box), this requires you to connect to he server in order to get feedback from other ventrilo users. First we will look at the "outbound" slider. This determines how loud you are to other users. Ask other people how loud your mic is, if they say "quiet" then go back into setup and put the outbound slider up. If they say you are too loud, move it down and ask again, continue until your mic is at an acceptable level.  Now we will look at all incomming signals. If you find the majority of incomming speech is too loud, move down the "Inbound" slider, if you find it quiet move the slider up.  Changing individual users volume will be discussed in a later part of this tutorial.
