Title: Server and webserver move (again)
Post by: EvilWhiteDragon on November 24, 2009, 11:25:29 am
As you might have heard we have a small conflict with TransIP. Basically the problem is as follow: we've apparently used too much power off their powergrid, more than allowed by the contract. Now they charge us extra for that. All this is pretty fair, but the thing that troubles us the most is that they just started doing this since November. All of the sudden we're using too much power. Not any single warning or whatever. I e-mailed them asking for some leniency for the first month, because we never knew how much power our server was using.

Because of this, we'll be moving our server (http://www.blackintel.org/servers) to a new colocation provider which should provide us with enough power for a decent price. Basically we'll be paying 45 euros a month instead of the current 55+23,50 (overusage) = 78,50 euro. The only downside of this is that our server will be down when we move it and ,even worse, we need to pay December both to our old provider as to our new provider + setup fee at our new provider. We expect that this will cost us about 180 to 200 euros which kinda sucks ;). Because of this huge amount of money we're once more asking for your donation. Even if it's just 5 euro it'll help out, we would appreciate it greatly!

Since we're moving the server. our website would experience downtime. Since we dislike having both our gameservers and webserver down at the same time, we're planning to move the website to Sep76's host before we're going to move the server. We expect to do this somewhere this week/weekend. The moving itself can be done pretty fast, but the DNS update could take some time to get through (up to 24 hours) so don't be scared if our website is down all of the sudden.
During the website downtime you will still be able to visit us on IRC (scroll down a bit) (http://www.blackintel.org/servers) where you can have a chat with us if you want :).

When we have a fixed date for the webserver move we'll post more! The game or main) server will probably be moved on December the 12th, but that's not yet confirmed.

The website should not have any downtime actually, during the DNS update period, the current website will still be accessible. The forums will be placed in read-only mode or maintenance mode however, because otherwise new posts placed at the old/current host will not be available on the new host. If we can we'll do something even smarter and keep forum downtime to a minimum (only a few minutes)... We can't fully guarantee that though; so if things are down you'll know why. :)

I think I might donate. Have to ask my parents permission first though (sigh).

If it'd be of any help, we could cent an email to your parents explaining what it is we do and how we spend your money. It could also help your parents understanding what you're doing on the internet all the time ;)

Or I could just tell them on one of the many conversations I have with your mother on Vent, sly :P

That might be an option too, but I can imagen that it helps when the one who receives the money explains what he/she would do with it. Particularly in the case where it is something 'unknown' like a website.

Bank transfer is an option, so you would transfer money directly into my bankaccount. This is within mainland europe also the cheapest way of transfering money.
A different option would be to snailmail the money. S0megeeza once send me 70 euros by snailmail.

I'll see how my Christmas bonus and wages turn out (Dec 23rd), and probably donate then. Which will be too late for this project, but it's still money and hopefully can go towards something nice :)

We'll pay it anyway, that's not the point, it would just be nice if we (in the end) wouldn't have to pay for all of it ;)

With that font, it looks fucked up.

Make one of those neat Paypall donate buttons: those are easy to recognize.

Secondly, I would like to apologize for my long dispresence: Lately I have been quite busy and my GTA:VC addicition has been acting up again (so did my Fallout 3 addicition and EiR:R addiction, fueled by some friends of mine playing vCoH, which kind of meant me not playing renegade anymore lately, I will pick it up in the vacation of course ;). )

Also, Gwynzer will be seeing me on FS soon enough! (Damn, that is actually a pretty awesome game! :p )

I will see if I can make a donation btw, but Sinterklaas, clothing shopping and beer has been making a dent in my wallet, so can't be sure I have anything to spare (on the plus side: I AM handing in my application form at the local supermarket tomorrow!)

Well wow.  Friso growing up.  Oh, I remember the days when alchohol was a thing which hadn't even crossed his mind(and he also never had any money, they could be related).  Now he's getting a job, I'm so proud!  /me allows a "happiness" tear to drip down his cheek

More on topic, I've already put some more towards the costs, but it doesn't cover nearly the whole thing. Evil wants your Monies!

I would love to donate some money to BI, but I don't have a job.  However, when I do get a job I may start to donate and hopefully you'll be able to accept my american dollars. :)

If you use paypal this isn't an issue at all :) it automatically converts the dollars to real money ;)

Yup, it turns it into the British Pound end then into something awful like the Euro.

I'm afraid I won't be able to donate 'till after Christmas, because that is when I receive some cash from my family. I have almost nothing right now.

As said before, we'll pay it anyway, it's just nice knowing that we don't have to pay everyting in the end :) All donations are appreciated, regardless of when they are made ;)

Free Health Insurance from work FTW.

Trace, you can get more with monopoly money in monopoly than the British Pound in Britain, it doesn't make it better.

Regarding donations.

I belive amazon is doing some kind of deal where if a site registeres with them, and people go to amazon and buy something via a special link they give that site, amazon gives a small % of that sale money to us.

I'm seeing it done right now (in time for XMas) on a US site, so I'm not sure if it's unique to the US or if it's for anyone, but something to look into.

you know I think it would help if you had like a bar chart saying what you need and how much has been given

btw I don't know how much everyone has donated this is just an example

                      €38  of  €250

     €14 Gwynzer   €24DKDexter  €10Shippo

I could image donators not wanting that, so...
If they do then that's fine with me as well.
Title: Re: Server and webserver move (again)

Not Numbers, but "Donators" being listed and a percentage of total left of the months bill would be acceptable.
Don't even say how much it costs monthly, because then people can see exactly how much has been donated by that single person who has donated so far that month.
Title: Re: Server and webserver move (again)
Post by: DKDexter999 on December 02, 2009, 05:59:54 pm
I'd mind it saying how much I donated...

I don't mind it saying that *I have* donated, but the amount I've given will for all purposes remain between EWD and me :P (and perhaps Seye and Ghost too)

I could live with the amount shown in percentages though. Just don't show the final amount, because then if you're three donators you can estimate what the other two have donated (and if you're two you can calculate the exact amount the other person donated).

Post by: shippo on December 03, 2009, 05:53:11 pm
you don't have to put up the pp who donated I baslicly was curious if you wanted to put up a bar showing what our goal is so that pp would be more encuraged to give, if they knew how much was left.

I say we don't make a donate progress bar, because the amount I'll donate might be laughable (I don't make much cash).

If 10 persons donated 3 €, there's more than if two persons donate 10. Each little bit helps.
