let me explain a few things; i left out "BlackIntels official unofficial spam god" (something like that :P) because it was way to much text in such a small area. I hope you see the reference to Dexter still in there? with the font and blood splatters. (i did originally use white, and dexter promo colors, but i felt the darker sig looked much better)

worked really hard on this one, 3 renders.....very old technique for the background and then having to merge all the layers to create the background just to achieve final effect is scary. Friso didn't make this any easier by not liking my first one -.- :P

Okay so i incorporated teaching both into one nice tutorial :P With a sexy sig as the outcome :D

Signature BG and Positioning Tutorial
*Im pretty much assuming you know how to do the simple things in photoshop*
This bg method, works very well with computer game renders, but i personally dont think it looks too good with human renders. Movie characters etc.
1. Open photoshop, make a new document. I use 400 x 125.
2. Make a new layer (ctrl + shift +n) And with some custom brushes (i mostly use grunge brushes, use google to find some nice ones) randomly "paint" using black as your color onto the layer in a rough way, trying to cover most - but not all of the surface.

3. Now make a new layer again, select a different brush and use white as your main color. And do the same, evenly "paint" across your signature to contrast the black on the layer beneath. (again do it very rough)

4. Keep repeating this process. New layer, use new brush and black. Then new layer, new brush and use white as main color. Keep doing this for several layers until you are happy.

5. Now take your render, and just move it on top of your brush layers. It will probably be very big and fill the entire workspace. That's what you want :P If it doesnt fill it entirely, stretch it so it does. (ctrl+t making sure to hold shift while adjusting size to keep aspect ratio)

6. Now we are going to distort it :) There are many ways to do this, i like to: Go to filter - blur - motion blur. And use these settings:

7. Last now to get the BG complete before we add our render. Go to the layers pane with the layer you just blurred highlighted and click the drop down where it says normal, and change this to 'overlay'

-This is the part where you add your own magic :P Add your render, clean it up. blurring the bg a little, sharpening up the render, changing the lighting effects and playing with contrast, and variations. (it's way to much to teach really, its something you generally grasp the more you use photoshop)-
To pick up, now i'll add a bit on positioning for Diamond.

A very old and well known technique for photography, is the grid method. It works too for signatures :) I still do it now, i apply a grid over my signature as seen below

Basically where the lines cross, should be a point of interest. For instance now im wanting to add text. so, on both the left cross points i have my render. so it cant go there.... but on the right where the lines cross we have some space. A great place for my text. (quick note about text actually, try to keep it small. you dont want it taking away focus :P also steer clear of fancy bulky fonts, the simple ones often work best)
The grid method can and defiantly should be used when you position your render too. It puts it in an eye catching place. The "best" place :)

Yeah see thats not the best render to get the lighting working on the signature.
In the video i use the burn and dodge tool to create lighting, and then enhance the lighting that is already there using "render - lighting effect". But the render you have there, has weird lighting already. might take a lot of playing about with to make it sit right.

everything is going well from now (stopped for a little with making the sig :P my eyes hurt :P ) but the only thing i still cant do is the blending thing :P and did you first cut the pic or did you just find a frikking good example :P

Diamond, for which one? Most i use are pre-cut renders. However, your latest Resident Evil sig i made i cut myself. Spiderman i cut myself, i cut a lot myself when i cant find one for what i want.

We're using the render itself to create the background color....... plus using variations adding more of a certain color in can blend the two very well.

I'm sure it was for the person that cut it.......
cutting "rendering" is extremely difficult, im sure you didn't do it ;)
Regarding the sig, its a huge improvement yes :] But i dont see any blending on your render. Did you do any on it? You have to take loads of things into account, like lighting and matching colors, making sure the render sticks out from the bg, but not to much like you just pasted it on there and left it.

My cuts dont look nowhere near as good as the ones on planetrenders, it's just to use it in a small signature it doesnt matter. If i show you mine renders in full size before i blend them in a sig, they dont look too good at all.
here is my render of RE5 charachter. i did for your sig. If you look its not perfect, its always what i do. Hence why saying, cutting is difficult.

It appears i turned it on without noticing, before recording.
I type in notepad along with the video to explain how to do somethings, it's 20mb download and unpacked is 48mb. Over 30 mins long, again the outcome isnt my best but it shows how to blend better, and how to do a few other things.

Making your own brushes

well any way this is in my opinion the most easy way to make your own Brushes
maybe leeum will add some thing for some more professional brushes but untill that ill make a start
Step1.
Open photoshop and make a new empty layer ,size doenst matter

Step 2.
Now you have a empty nice little layer now add your own little magic , some stripes here some stripes there and voila here a example

Step 3.
now select the part where you have painted your own brush , i recommend to use the lasso tool for more precission , then go to EDIT ,Define brush set and then you'll see a bar simply press oke ( or if you want to give your brush your own name go ahead :D )

Step 4. look for your little brush in the brush menu and you are ready for action :D
short , simple effective :P if there are any problem's just ask ;)

There are much more intricate ways to edit and make them look amazing.
Like changing shadows, and adding gradients to give more detail. But that's kinda self explanatory.

Why would you want a colored brush? :P
a brush is a brush.....its not the "paint" ;) the user adds color schemes when they use them :]

Well, you can just place it somewhere and if you don't like it move it around.
And you can also flip the render horizontaly and see if that looks better :P

It does need to be within the grid position that i explained in my first tutorial.
If you look around at some amazing pieces of art, they tend to use the grid method. Its used in photography, and in a signature should be no different whatsoever. It's what i was always taught, im not pulling these pieces of advice out of my arse :P

That grid method was not very clear to me, could you for example explain how it applies to your own signature? I don't see how your render is in one of the grid line crossings?
I have too little time to experiment with these things, but I like to read the tutorials and watch the videos and hope I'll remember some of it whenever I'm doing some graphical work again. I really like the effort you put into teaching people this and it seems it's giving quite good results too! :)

Heres an example with my current sig.

As you can see, my render crosses all 4 points of interest (just) However you dont have to cover ALL of the points. The 4 cross points are where the eye looks naturally, so it would only make sense to lay all things that are of interest in these points.
When doing photography, you pick a subject to take a picture of and _most_ cameras have the option to apply a grid over your lcd display to line up your subject in the most eye catching way. When making signatures, or LA's (large art) it applies the same, just imagine you are taking a photo. The light..the position...the subject (render) everything has to be right.
In hindsight, looking at my current spidey sig i would move my render over to the left a bit leaving the face in a point of interest. However, at the time i wanted it over the hands and the mutating *thing* which turns him into black spidey (it has a name, i forget it ;P)
Another quick tip which ive mentioned but i'll explain in more detail, is check the light source, when i started with the render of spider. The light source was originally behind him, with a subject focus light in front (see (http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/1953/spiderman3japanbillboardr5.jpg)) I didn't like the light coming from the front, so i used the burn and dodge tools to create the effect that the light is solely above/behind him. And added my own light (white) brush strokes over his shoulder to emphasize this.
hope that covers some gaps :) Any help needed, just ask questions :P
And thomas, i made the grid. But it's not perfect, i just use my eye to visualise a grid over the top of my canvas. I just made one to visually show people how it's done, i will however make one now and save as psd and upload shortly :)
EDIT:
Made one which is perfect, measured out. For a 400x125 canvas, you can resize it for bigger/smaller canvasses. Just press ctrl+t and drag to size making sure to hold shift while doing so to keep aspect ratio. If you would prefer a more accurate one, just say the size of the canvas and i will make one for you and upload.

It's not 100% needed, but on some like dhdcs, i think it needs a border :P
Basic border.
make a new layer, ctrl + shift + n. select all the canvas, with marquee tool right click on your sig and select stroke. Black usually works best, and 2-4 pixels. :]

As you can see, very different again :) It's best not to stick to the same methods, my original way of making signatures takes about 10 minutes.....the kind of work like above takes hours, and overall are better critiqued. But as many say, it doesn't have to take a long time to create something good :P
P.S. if not obvious before......I BUM Spider-Man. I love the comics, the TV series and the movies. :$

nope not with brushes :P
Yet again, I didn't use any custom brushes. I just changed the properties of the normal brushes. But the lines are created with the pen tool, it's umm.....rather difficult. I can maybe release the PSD if people want to look at it?
Edit: i dont think i used a single brush layer in there whatsoever.... nope. It's originally from a stock image with a new york background. that's all been smudged. Added about 10 different c4d renders, alot of gradient maps, photo filters and clipping masks. So alot of new techniques to teach if anyone is interested, but first i'll have to get fully used to them too :P

Um can I ask what's the sphere look like on its on? Is that black bg actually on the image?
I suggest maybe getting rid of the black bg on it, and get some blending done on the whole sphere itself. I really like the blackground, seems like you've done quite a good job on that.
After playing with the sphere, (track around all of it, with an eraser brush at 60% opacity, and maybe even set its blending mode to overlay.) Try adding another render in there too, something more to pull focus. Liking it's prospects though, has potential! very different :P

CoD4 Scope Wallpaper
Decided to put wallpapers I make in here too now. Quite proud of this one :) (btw, <--foobar just opened when i typed that smiley >.> - for anyone that read my problem topic)
How I did it
I used this image for the focal: http://syckaudio.com/files/images/08114_lcd_30inch_11h.jpg (<--- I removed the tags above the players) and I had CoD4 open for reference on how some of the scopes looked, then recreated the look of them using the eclipse tool and contract method so I could line up the reticle exactly in the centre of the scope.

With c4ds it's all about layering, and looking at the image you have to start.
I'll write a tutorial on them tomorrow if i can find the time.
It's pretty much hit and miss with them, but a general rule of thumb is to look at the flow of the image you have to start and extend that flow with a c4d, erase bits you don't want, and then layer different types of c4d over it; erasing more bits again. Also try to use good contrasting colors, if you're unsure on what colors work just google color swatch generator, and have a play around with some colors.

As I said on Msn, tis much better :D Some colors could do with being brought out a little more in my personal opinion but that's just me. I usually end up ruining the original color of my renders when I play about too much.
But as the comic book venom is more purple than black, and that is the comic book venom It looks a little too black for my eyes :P

Its Ok, but a bit much of the same color everywhere. It sort of misses an object which to focus on (the dragon blends in with the background a bit, it doesn't 'jump out') IMO

I quite like it! And I like the fact that something isn't 'standing out'. That means the attention from the post isn't stolen.

I think it's really well put together.
It's lacking a nice colour contrast but it does work, the text is plain and sticks out without pulling focus too much and is well placed. To suggest an improvement, I'd say go around the dragon with the burn tool (Photoshop) to pull it out a bit and give it more depth.
Other than that, it's really nice. I especially like the background texture and the use of colour above the dragon.

Well I went round where you had use the burn tool with a little blurring with a feathered brush, then I applied the image layer (I do this for pretty much every change I make). I then added more orange and red colours via 'Image - adjustments - variations', i repeated it twice with an applied image layer in the middle until i was happy. Then adjusted the shadows and highlights under 'Image - adjustments - shadows and highlights'. After another applied image, I added a strong light source over the dragons head ('Filter - render - lighting effects') and finally after yet another applied image layer I added another light source a little more wide spread and lowered the opacity on the previous layers until i was happy.
Hope this helps :) Any terminology I've used that may be confusing. just ask me to explain :P it's just gone 1am and I'm rather tired to say the least :P

I then added more orange and red colours via 'Image - adjustments - variations', i repeated it twice with an applied image layer in the middle until i was happy. Then adjusted the shadows and highlights under 'Image - adjustments - shadows and highlights'. After another applied image, I added a strong light source over the dragons head ('Filter - render - lighting effects') and finally after yet another applied image layer I added another light source a little more wide spread and lowered the opacity on the previous layers until i was happy.
Hope this helps :) Any terminology I've used that may be confusing. just ask me to explain :P it's just gone 1am and I'm rather tired to say the least :P

The name is my name in another game (not gonna tell the story of how i got that name) but the stats update with my stats in game
the game i play (heroes of newerth) is good for allowing access to in games stats so i thought i would make a sig with the stats on.

i used to play allot of 2vs2's on CS:S where i used to be named JerryXD and my mate used to be called TomXD and then when i registered my HON account i couldn't use DHDC so i used that then ended up using that on steam as well as i play CS:S with that name now

I like the second one (one with the soldier).
Third one is way too grainy (around the buildings), first is a bit too light + too grainy too imo (however thats probably the design)
