In short, I think there are a lot of things wrong in the away we're currently treating IP. Yes it certainly needs to be protected but as the movie state, everything is based on something. This means that at least some aspects have been done before and therefore only new because of new combinations of ideas.
To progress as a society we need to keep doing this, something which is currently hampered by the long protection of IP.
This is particularly absurd if one realises that when patents and copyright was instated, products and content were made to last. Nowadays phones are designed to last say 3 years, preferably 2 while on the other hand patents and copyright are extended more and more.
